As someone who witnessed and experienced the horrifying effects of domestic violence, I wanted to share that experience through comics and inspire others to get out of their terrible situations.

Crowbar - The Autobio Comic

Crowbar is a comic that tells the true story of the attempted murder of my mother and how we ended up escaping domestic violence. This is the first proposed chapter and the rest of the book (which we hope to finish in the near future) would follow my life and the lasting effects it had on my mother, my brother, and me.

I collaborated on these ten pages with the very talented Gale Galligan (Babysitter's Club) and they can also be found on her website.

Dangers of Domestic Violence

Please seek any and all help if you find yourself in a domestic violence situation and always help those in need. Most people turn away and pretend like it doesn't happen. Don't be one of those people.
The Graphic Novel Workshop put on by Avenue for the Arts in Grand Rapids was fantastic. I got to talk to people excited about making their own comics while talking to other creators about process, self-publishing and making good comics.

If you missed the workshop, here's a quick rundown of what we talked about.

Graphic Novel Workshop

The workshop was hosted by Avenue for the Arts in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They were kind enough to host the event in their space on Divison Avenue and the seats quickly filled up for the event. We had four panelists including myself, Jim Towe (who was nice enough to Skype in), Cody Flowers, and Lamont Arrington. Jackie Vega acted as the moderator and we answered questions that she prepared, as well as questions from the audience and each other.

It gave me a chance to talk about creating Barnstormers! with an audience and to share my experiences with running the Kickstarter campaign. There were copies of Barnstormers! circulated around the audience so that people could see the finished product and work that was put into the book.
I also talked about working on Yakuza for SEGA and what it's like to do licensed work. I talked about the difference between a graphic novel and a comic book (from my perspective it has to do with length and pacing) and how writers, artists, letterers, colorists, and editors are involved.

Barnstormers! is an original graphic novel that I created with artist Renny Castellani and a group of talented creators. With the success of the first volume and the Kickstarter, I wanted to share the journey of this comic with you and inspire others to create their own comics and put them out into the world.

This blog will give a brief story about the story, the Kickstarter, the people who made it all come together, and where you can find copies of Barnstormers! if you missed the campaign.

A Graphic Novel Years in the Making

Creating a graphic novel, comic, or even mini-comic is no easy task. It can take months or years for a talented team to bring a whole project from start to finish.

The story follows the adventures of blue-collar monster hunters Roscoe, Anna, and Clyde. Former pilots in WWI, the gang makes money as pilots that kill monsters for a quick buck. But when money gets tight, Roscoe makes a deal with a mysterious adventurer named Doc Lyon that will put him on easy street.

Too bad that street's paved with bloodthirsty cult members, giant monsters, and iron soul-eating dragons.

What's the worst that could happen?

EVERYTHING.

Barnstormers! From Concept to Kickstarter

The story started as a five-page short comic for Comics Experience that just covered the prologue. I had been kicking around the idea of biplane pilots hunting giant monsters for years. Inspired by stories like Dave Stevens' The Rocketeer and the cartoon SWAT Kats, I wanted to make something that was fun and told a personal story.

Once Renny and I met online and discussed the characters, it wasn't long before we decided to jump in and do a much larger story about responsibility and relationships.

But Renny and I didn't do it alone. We had lots of help. The book would have never been finished without Jim Towe (Youngblood), Gale Galligan (Babysitter's Club), Jon Alderink (Citizen Jack), Nic J. Shaw (The Fix), and Shawn Lee (TMNT). Each of them gave their talents to the project and we're eternally grateful.

All three issues of the story were completed over a year and a half and were set to be released. But when the initial publishing deal fell through, Barnstormers! was left completed, but without a way to get into reader's hands.

The Kickstarter Campaign

I decided to do a Kickstarter campaign after my friends urged me to put the book out myself. I wanted to make sure that I wasn't shooting too far in terms of goals or rewards, so I kept it fun and simple with a finished trade paperback and extra digital comics for people willing to support our dream project.

The results blew me away.

The book was 100% funded on the second day of the campaign. People started donating left and right and sharing it through social media, comic book review websites, and it even got the attention of some podcasts.

Not only that, but Barnstormers! was featured as one of Kickstarter's "Projects We Love" after the first week!

After 30 days we had doubled the amount we were hoping for and were ready to ship the completed graphic novel out into reader's hands.

Shipping out Kickstarter Rewards

Shipping the rewards was something I knew I was going to do myself. I buckled down with some podcasts and a big cup of coffee to ship every book out over the next two weeks. I personally signed and packaged each copy and mailed them out from Grand Rapids into the world.

Each envelope I shipped made me step back and realize just how magical it is to take a book from concept to reality. Being able to flip through the pages and turn it over in your hands is a kind of magic that you can't get anywhere else.

Fans With Barnstormers!

No matter how I felt about the finished book, it was the reaction that made me the happiest. Since I've shipped out the book I've gotten pictures of readers with copies of Barnstormers! and messages about how much they enjoyed the story.

Also, how much their kids enjoyed the story. While there is a bit of sex, drugs, and rock 'n' roll in the book, it was always intended as an "all readers" story. Meaning that it wasn't for adults, wasn't for kids, but for everyone.

Knowing that there's been such a positive reaction has put me on the fast track to doing another volume as soon as possible.

But what if you missed out on the Kickstarter and still want a copy?

I want other creators to take this away from Barnstormers! -- make your comics and share them with the world. Don't wait for permission, don't wait for someone to do it for you, just get them out into the world and into reader's hands.
This story follows a desperate man named P.J. as he's stalked by a floating speedboat and the realization that he's grown up without any real friends.

I tried a different writing style with this story and I'm happy that it paid off. I went a little bit shorter with my sentences and tried to channel Vonnegut and Hemingway while still adding my own flair to the story.

A Different Kind of Post-Apocalyptic Story

Post-apocalyptic stories are a dime a dozen these days. Whether it's the zombie trope or the Mad Max kind of warrior scenario, every other piece of science fiction tackles the subgenre in about the same way.

And then there's Humanity Has Declined.

Humanity Has Declined - The Premise

A strange little anime that explores a future where the old humans are slowly declining and going extinct, while the new humans or "fairies" are taking over. Aside from being told out of order, the story goes on weird tangents that explore how humans get into self-destructive fads and behavior through culture, food, and society.

Here's a quick premise from Crunchyroll:

"Our human race has been slowly declining for centuries now. In many ways, the Earth already belongs to the Fairies. Life is relaxed and care... free? Thus begins a story that is a little strange and just a tiny bit absurd."

If you're still a little lost, don't worry, it's a strange and confusing series. But ultimately it's one that we both enjoyed quite a bit. The openning of the show is stronger than the ending, but the sheer absurdity captures a story that feels right at home with Douglas Adams or Kurt Vonnegut.
Slapstick

The Kurt Vonneguys Podcast is one of my new favorite things in the universe. Going back through one of my favorite writer's catalog makes me realize just how special their work was. I discovered Vonnegut after high school. I bought Slaughterhouse Five on a whim and read it from cover to cover. No book had grabbed me like that since I devoured The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy for the first time.

Slapstick isn't a book of Vonnegut's that people talk about as much, but it might be one of my new favorites. It's got all of the absurdity of books like Sirens of Titan or Cat's Cradle with Vonnegut's unique take on family and relationships.

Also, there's a King of Michigan and erections based on gravity wells.

Part of me wonders why I don't write prose more often. Maybe it's because I think so visually that I just default to writing comics. I started a fiction blog last year and haven't been keeping up on it, but now I think I'm going to go back to it and write a little each day, even if it isn't any sort of long term project.

As always, thanks for the inspiration Mr. Vonnegut.

I want to start keeping track and reflecting on all the comics that I read this year. I've already read about 40-50 trades in 2017, but I rarely get to talk about them or discuss them with anyone.

That's going to change.

I'm going to keep a record here on my blog of everything that I read. It's not really for anyone but myself, but I think it's important to keep a record of how a book affected me.

Hip Hop Family Tree was a delight to read. Ed Piskor put together a stunning historical comic that captures the essence of the art form and mixes it with one of the other unique American inventions -- comic books.

I'm going to have to sit down and flip through the book again for a refresher. It's really dense, so keeping track of everything that happened and all of the people it tracked was a bit of a task, but it's nothing a quick jaunt between the pages can't fix.

I'm excited to pick up the other volumes and check them out over the course of the year.Kenny Porterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03617729648694610634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4756948157244784786.post-41190880449075683012017-01-01T13:31:00.004-08:002017-01-01T13:31:56.858-08:00The Grill Out - Pif MagazineMy short story "The Grill Out" has just been published by Pif Magazine! Short Story News

My short story "The Grill Out" has been picked up for publication by an online magazine. "The Grill Out" was inspired by those people in your office that want to be everyone's friend, even if it isn't the best idea.

I wrote this story under the influence of a lot of Douglas Adams and Kurt Vonnegut stories. I feel like that comes off in the writing quite a bit. I've always enjoyed stories about ordinary people in extraordinary social situations, so I hope everyone that reads the story takes the same humor and outlook away from "The Grill Out."

Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for more news about the publication!

All of this was accomplished by simply finding free articles and eBooks that dealt with copywriting and blogging and applying those practices to my daily tasks. It doesn't sound like much, but it adds up over time and really makes a difference.

Wow... this one was interesting, to say the least. If there's one thing Aaron and I have realized about modern anime, a lot of it is not for us. This series is practically an offering to the almighty Edge Lord. I can see why some folks would dig it, but it was just too hard for us to get into.

Here's the Mobile Suit Gundam: Movie I podcast episode of the Future Brothers Podcast!

The Future Brothers Podcast features hosts Kenny Porter and Aaron Delgaty as they watch science fiction anime and discuss it on the show. It's less of a review show and more of a critical examination of popular series, seeing if they hold up over time.

We're both huge Mobile Suit Gundam fans, so it was exciting to go back and examine the original Universal Century series of the Gundam franchise. Zeon and the Federation are about to clash, and we're along for the ride!

This weekend is C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) and I couldn't be more excited. C2E2 is one of my favorite conventions and always has interesting panels, creators, and exhibitors for new and old fans.

Taken from c2e2.com

Here are some things you must do if you go to C2E2 this year:

Support independent comic creators

Buy original art from artists

Buy comics and stories from writers

Party hard

Be safe

Taken from enmnetwork.com

I'm not tabling this year, but I will be walking around with a Pro Pass. Feel free to say hello and chat if you see me on the floor.

I look forward to seeing you all there!

Keep it wizard,

I'm a little late on this one, but I wanted to share the new episode of the Interrupted Podcast again. Marshall Dillon asked me to come on and talk about some of my writing history and process, and of course we went off topic in the best ways possible.
I had a great time talking with Marshall about writing comics and how I put a script together. I was also jazzed to talk about Barnstormers!, which I'm collaborating on with Renata Castellani.

I wrote a new page of a script I'm working on called Hit 'em High this morning. I only had five to six panels to tell a complete scene and the shift from the character being in a hopeful state to going to a disappointed that he got what he wanted state.

Does that make sense? It's early and the coffee hasn't kicked in yet.

Coffee approved by the Comics Code.

I only got the one page done this morning, but I took extra time to make sure the scene worked (at least for this draft). I used to rush through drafts just to finish things, but I feel like my writing has improved by slowing down and making sure I do rewrites as I work.

Stephen King's On Writing had a few sections that talked about writing and rewriting. I haven't read the book in several years, but I remember him saying that you shouldn't do rewrites until you've walked away from the project for a little while.

Here's a related quote from On Writing from Business Insider:

This is the most direct quote I can find that talks about "identifying the trees" when it comes to character, but it applies to all aspects of the story.

My only problem with waiting so long to work on a draft is that your intentions and idea of the story can change after waiting. I might want to completely change what the story is about and undo the original intention of the piece because I waited to long to go back to the project. Rewriting while writing allows me to think about what's happening while I write instead of after I write the story.

Do you feel the same way?

Would you rather wait to rewrite a story until after you've completed the entire project?

Post a comment and let me know!
Thanks for listening to today's rambling on writing and comics and a bigger thanks for reading this blog post.

This update is all about the artwork. Gale Galligan was kind enough to give me the okay to share some of her concept art and character sketches for the memoir. Right now I'm just going to post the character sketches for my brother and me during the opening of the book.

Gale is incredibly talented and I'm thrilled to be working with her. I'll be sharing layouts and more character sketches as they arrive.

The ultimate goal is to complete the first 10-page chapter, which can stand on its own as a short story about how spousal abuse affects the lives of everyone involved. From there we'll be pitching the story as a complete work and then going on to finish it ourselves regardless.

I'll make sure to keep everyone posted on Crowbar as we continue with the book.

It's been a few days since I've updated, but sometimes life finds a way to stop your blog. Sometimes its with hospital visits and helping family, sometimes its because someone created dinosaurs in a theme park by splicing frog DNA.

But I've still been writing and working on the memoir whether I've posted about it or not. Gale and I email frequently and talk about the project, as well as just check up on each other since we're both quality people. I'm going to say it a lot, but Gale is a fantastic collaborator.

Right now my challenge is breaking the second chapter. I have a general outline and a solid ending, I'm just discovering new recurring themes and elements in my true story that I didn't notice until now. It's like my life is a movie I've had on in the background a hundred times, but never sat down to actually watch and analyze the damn thing. Once you do you start noticing some pretty interesting stuff.

One recurring element in my life is prison or imprisonment. I'm kind of the black sheep of my immediate family, because I'm the only one that's never been incarcerated. But there's a period of my life that was very much like being in prison, and playing with that element in the story is going to be important.

At least I think it will be.

I'll be sharing some layouts and character sketches in the next post, as well as a more solid synopsis. I wanted Gale's permission before I started posting stuff, because this is her project just as much as it is mine.

I'm also willing to share script pages and talk about the writing process if anyone is interested. Just leave a comment with any questions you have and I'll make sure to answer them!

Thanks for reading and keep on writing!

I've been having a bit of a crazy week dealing with some family stuff, but I'm back on track with writing now. I actually recorded an episode of a podcast on writing, which I'll share when it gets posted.

The memoir is coming along on schedule. I was sent some updates by Gale and she asked me if it she was good to start working on the layouts. I told her to go for it, so now I'm waiting for those sweet pages to roll in! She's a delight to collaborate with and I couldn't be happier with the process.

I still don't have anything that I can share just yet, so please enjoy this little snippet of writing advice from Brian Clark that I completely agree with.

Makes sense to me.

I'm revising the outline for the rest of the story and coming up with the pitch for the book. I plan on submitting to both comic book and regular book publishers. I might even send it to some literary agents, since comic book memoirs tend to be a bit more popular in the literary world. At least when it comes to academia.

The projects I'm spending more time on while I work through these next steps are a manga inspired title that I talk about on the podcast, as well as the edits of the chapters of the novel I wrote this past summer.Kenny Porterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03617729648694610634noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4756948157244784786.post-18558700566874978712015-09-07T16:51:00.000-07:002015-09-07T16:51:11.165-07:00Writing a Comic Book Memoir: Part 2Hey Readers!

Despite a very surprising and stressful day I was actually able to get a few script pages of Crowbar done today.

This was me today.

One thing about writing a true story and focusing on the key scenes of my life that relate to the narrative is that I'm having to do a lot more skips in time than I originally thought I would. I knew going into the story that there would be major events at different stages of my life, but I wanted to try and convey the same feelings or problems over the course of years on a single page.

I think I covered it in this first draft, but luckily I can always go back and rewrite it if it doesn't work. Knowing that I'm going to have to rewrite a story eventually is a blessing when it comes to moving on with the project. One of the things I clashed over with some of my professors in college was that most writing students aren't taught to finish anything.

What was their excuse?

"It's all about the process," they said.

Well no amount of process matters if you don't finish writing the damn thing. Not every comic I write ends up being drawn or published, but I at least make sure to finish the script. I'll even finish scripts or stories for things that I know I'm not going to send out.

That's a thing I've heard about from some other writers lately, that it's good to just finish things no matter how good or bad they are. I've found that it helps me target areas where my writing could be stronger and I make a point of improving on it the next time around.

I do have some character sketches that I can share, but I'm going to ask for permission before I do that.

Until then enjoy a piece of comic book storytelling craft talk from master Scott McCloud as he talks about clarity in making comics.

Scott McCloud lays down the science of simplicity in storytelling.

Thanks for keeping up with this blog as I continue to work on my comic book memoir. Or is it just called a true story because of the collaboration thing? I still haven't looked that up, so I promise I'll do that for the next post!

I've recently decided to tell the story about my mother's attempted murder and how it affected me as a person and eventually led me to writing and creating comics. I'm collaborating on a pitch for the book now with the superb Gale Galligan, and I decided to document the process on my blog.

Why you ask?

For a few reasons. The first is that I don't update my blog enough, so this is a chance for me to explore and talk about my own writing while taking on a type of project that I've never done before. The second reason is that I want to be held accountable for finishing the project, no matter how long it takes!

Right now I've written Chapter 1 (of 6) and Gale is working on character sketches. Once I get her permission I'll share them with you, but for now I'll show you a picture of the document I'm working on right now.

Riveting picture right there--document porn!

I'm currently envisioning the finished story at about 60 pages minimum, but for now Gale and I are only worrying about the first 10-page chapter.

More images and information to come!

Right now the only challenge I have is what to label the comic. Is it memoir? Or is it just a true story because it's a collaboration?

I'm interested in any and all thoughts on the subject!

If you have any questions please comment below and I'll address them in the next post. Until then keep reading and keep writing!
